He did poop in the potty 3 times but for some reason he is scared of it now. For like an hour he'll squeal out , "Oowwww!" and run to the bathroom but he will not go. I sing to him. We count. I read to him. After about an hour of this, he'll just go in his underwear.
Does anyone have any ideas or advise about this?
I know a couple of families that use the idea of little incentives for going in the potty. For example, if they went in the potty they would get to put a sticker on the chart, and every five or ten intervals they get a treat or get to do something special. I'm not really sure if that would help your situation.. but I'll be praying for you guys!
ReplyDeleteTry buying a mini potty that sits on the floor. Don't flush til later. Alina regressed some after I didn't hold her well enough in a public toilet and she fell in. He might suddenly be scared of the toilet. Sounds silly but kids do it a lot
ReplyDeleteTry to avoid Pull-Ups - they can't feel when they go, so they aren't uncomfortable: Thus, no motivation. Plus, Pull-Ups are so expensive and wasteful. Fine for night and emergencies, but otherwise I would avoid them. Just my advice after 2 kiddos.
ReplyDelete(And it's me, Jan Walker, not Kate - Kate's my daughter!)
ReplyDeleteLots of kids are nervous about #2 on the potty. When our son felt the urge to poop but couldn't get comfy on the potty (and was nervous), I'd sit in there with him and make really, really silly crazy faces. He'd laugh so hard and then start pooping!! So funny. But it worked : ) And make sure he tucks his man-parts down...learned that the hard way too! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI give mine welchers fruit snacks. . .one for pee and two for poop! Simple, but a big deal for them and still is after being trained for 6 months now.
ReplyDelete*also watch for signs that he has to poop NOW, then race him to the bathroom and let him go on his own. Afterwards praise him a lot!
i have some (now that i look back at them) humorous bloggings about this topic ;) let him run around naked! worked well for us!
ReplyDeleteI never had to do this with Porter because he's a borderline germaphobe, but when we were little, Mom used to make us clean our own poop up. I don't remember it, but I remember watching Miriam have to do it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, avoid automatic toilets at all costs. Porter almost completely started over because of an automatic toilet. And he's still terrified of them.
If he is straining a lot to go it may be that it actually hurts to go. Consider increasing his fiber, for example fruit juice, etc. & see if that helps. I have always been told that potty training boys is much harder than girls. I will keep you in my prayers
ReplyDeleteHey Helen Joy -- Have potty trained six kids, but only one boy. What worked best for ME was ... (and I know there are many who disagree with waiting ...)
ReplyDelete1) Don't start too early. Often, it's the mom who gets trained to rush her child to the potty at the right time, right expression, etc. It's SO much easier when they are truly physically ready.
2) Mine weren't reallly ready until about age 3. When they were physically/mentally mature enough, potty training happened almost overnight with very few accidents. {I learned this after trying to train too early and cleaning up awful messes.}
3) Especially for boys, no pull-ups -- summer time and naked is best. For all of them, no pull-ups, but underwear -- they get the immediate cause & effect and it helps them understand.
After I learned this, potty training was almost a breeze -- not perfect, and a few accidents did happen ... but it was a zillion times easier on all of us that me chasing around, asking questions, giving treats, having kids scared of using the potty, especially when they don't have the ability to talk well enough to communicate well what was going on in their heads.
Just my two cents... Marji McIlvaine
I started potty training my little man this sunday, all is well my way too!! Keep up the good work Barclay!!!
ReplyDeleteseconding the getting a little poddy and waiting to flush. It's scary to them sitting on a huge toilet and seeing a part of them getting flushed away. Little treats like candy and stuff works great too. Boys are much harder then girls and usually don't learn til 3 wheras girls are about 2. Don't stress out about it you will do fine:)
